Confessions of obsessive camp producers
We’ve been around for 37 years, so a lot of you know a little something about Steve & Kate’s. Still, there’s one thing we think you should know.
Despite our success, we think this place could be A LOT better. Sure, we introduced individualized learning in a summer camp setting. We pioneered flexible enrollment and automatic refunds. Integrated a custom food program designed by expert chefs. Implemented technology so aggressively that Apple Computer featured us on their web site. That’s pretty cool.
Still, we’re hardly kicking back resting on our laurels. Summer rolls around fast. We only have nine short months to completely reinvent the entire concept of summer camp for the modern era.
–Steve, Kate and Oz
Champion of individualized learning, obsessed with reinventing summer camp, Steve founded Steve & Kate’s Camp in 1980. He chose to study child development at Cornell University over circus arts at Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey Clown College. He’s performed professionally as a magician and juggler, taught music at Tamalpais Valley School and served on the Mill Valley Schools Community Foundation Board.
Resident Aussie and camp co-visionary, Kate is the woman who put the Kate in Steve & Kate’s. She graduated from Stanford with a B.A. in Human Biology and a varsity letter in crew. Steve proposed to Kate in an under-sea grotto beneath the Great Barrier Reef. At least that’s what they tell people.
Steve and Kate’s son, Oz, will be attending camp for his ninth summer. He’s partial to using the sewing machine and playing the drums and last summer he could not get enough of the Game Show.
